# Advoca Health > Advoca is a free AI health companion app built by NHS doctors. At its heart is an AI health assistant — an agentic chatbot that understands your whole health record and answers questions grounded in verified medical evidence. Around it, Advoca records your appointments, keeps a health journal, and helps you plan and prepare for what's next. Built for cancer patients, rare disease patients, anyone managing a long-term condition, and the carers supporting them. Free on iOS and Android in the UK, US, and Ireland. ## What Advoca does - **AI health assistant (core)** — an agentic chatbot that draws on everything in your record: your appointment summaries and transcripts, your journal, your planned appointments, and a database of verified medical evidence. Ask anything about your health and get sourced, referenced answers. A complexity toggle switches between **Detailed** (all the facts, in plain language) and **Simple** (the essentials, at a reading age of 11). - **Record appointments** — record any healthcare appointment (in-person or telephone) with consent, and get a clear, structured summary in seconds: a one-line purpose, key points, next steps, and results. Works offline, checks the transcript for errors (especially doses and figures), links out to trusted resources, and defines medical terms. Available in detailed or simple versions, and shareable as a PDF with carers and loved ones. - **Health journal** — track symptoms, medications, results, energy, mood, and food, by typing or just by chatting to the assistant. The assistant can search your journal to spot trends and pull it into reports. Set your journal frequency, keep a streak, and get reminders. - **Plan appointments** — add upcoming appointments manually or conversationally, prepare notes (the assistant can help research and draft them), and get reminders on the day to record. Integrates with your phone's calendar. - **Trusted answers** — every medical answer is grounded in a curated database of verified NHS, charity, and clinical sources, retrieved and cited back to you. Sources are scoped to each user's conditions to reduce the risk of misinformation or distress. - **Research review (premium)** — the assistant can search and explain relevant published research papers. - **Paid research opportunities** — opt in to share fully anonymised data with medical and life-sciences researchers, and be rewarded for taking part. ## Who Advoca is for Advoca is built for anyone navigating their health — whether they have a stack of specialist appointments to keep track of, or simply want to understand and record their own health day to day. It's built from the ground up for: - **Cancer patients** and their carers - **Rare disease patients** and their families - People with **chronic illness** or long-term conditions - **Carers**, parents, and family members supporting a loved one - Anyone navigating a new or complex diagnosis, pregnancy, or mental-health care - Anyone who wants to track their health or has ever left a consultation wishing they could replay it ## Who built Advoca Advoca was built by two NHS doctors, **Dr Shyam Dhokia** (MB BChir, Cambridge) and **Dr Michael Trueman** (MBBS, Birmingham), who met working on the wards in Newcastle, UK. They saw that not understanding their own care was one of the biggest problems patients faced. Clinicians have had ambient scribes to record and summarise appointments for them — Advoca brings that same power to the patient. ## Charity partners Advoca works alongside UK charities supporting patient communities: - **Brainstrust** — the brain cancer people — https://brainstrust.org.uk - **Inflammatory Neuropathies UK (INUK)** — support for people living with GBS, CIDP and related neuropathies — https://www.inflammatory-neuropathy.org - **Parathyroid UK** — supporting patients with parathyroid and calcium conditions — https://parathyroiduk.org ## Key questions & direct answers **What is Advoca?** Advoca is a free AI health companion app built by NHS doctors.
